What follows an abnormal screening result in Korea?

Published

A screening result can identify a need for further assessment; diagnosis and follow-up require the clinical pathway stated in the result.

An abnormal Korean screening result needs clinical assessment rather than a diagnosis from a screening label. Check the written result, recommended follow-up and the scope of any confirmation examination.

Does an abnormal screening result confirm disease?

A screening result can identify a need for further assessment; diagnosis and follow-up require the clinical pathway stated in the result.

The result report and its reference range belong to the examination that was actually performed. A normal result cannot answer questions about every disease, and an abnormal flag alone does not establish a diagnosis. Keep the report available for the clinician who will review it.

Some national-screening findings have a defined confirmatory-test support pathway. The supported disease, permitted institution type, time limit and number of visits differ. A private optional test and a national confirmatory benefit must not be treated as the same entitlement.

Which information should accompany a follow-up consultation?

Keep the original result report and the list of examinations performed.

The reference range belongs to the specific examination and laboratory context. A shortened label or a remembered number may omit information needed for interpretation.

A result within a reference range also does not answer whether every possible disease is absent. Discuss the written result in the context of the examination actually received.

Does national screening provide a confirmation-examination route?

Some findings have a separate confirmation-examination route whose conditions need to be checked.

NHIS describes a second-examination route for findings suspicious for conditions such as hypertension or diabetes. Do not extend that description to every abnormal item or every additional private test.

Applicable disease, institution type, deadline and support frequency depend on the program. Use the instruction issued with the result rather than assuming an identical entitlement for all findings.

Can the eligibility calculator interpret an abnormal result?

The eligibility worksheet compares program rules; it does not interpret laboratory results or make a diagnosis.

Birth year, sex and insurance category identify some screening conditions, not the cause or clinical significance of a result. The tool has no medical-history or result-entry field.

For interpretation, retain the report and follow the clinical consultation route. For entitlement questions, use the NHIS program and screening notice.
