Planning a checkup visit to Korea
National screening follows public program rules; a private comprehensive checkup follows a separately agreed program.
Korea Checkup Guide separates a reference rule comparison from an individual NHIS decision. Use the source-specific conditions for the screening year.

How do national and private checkups differ?
National screening follows public program rules; a private comprehensive checkup follows a separately agreed program.
A private program can contain an examination with the same name as a national-screening item. The shared name does not make the whole private package an insurance benefit. Separate the publicly funded items from optional tests in any written scope.
Visitors without an applicable NHIS screening entitlement should not assume that a passport or a tourist itinerary grants the national program. Immigration examinations and employer-required certificates are also separate purposes, with their own required forms and designated rules.
| Route | Who defines the scope | How entitlement is checked |
|---|---|---|
| National screening | Public program age, sex and interval rules | NHIS notice and current insurance record |
| Private comprehensive checkup | Agreed examination program | Provider documents and consent |
| Immigration or employment examination | Purpose-specific official requirement | Relevant authority and designated form |
What happens before and after a checkup?
Check entitlement, confirm the designated screening type, follow written preparation instructions and arrange how results will be received.
A visit has more than a test date. Language support for the questionnaire, consent and results may need separate confirmation. An institution count does not identify which communication services are available or whether a particular appointment is open.
Preparation depends on the planned tests and individual circumstances. This guide does not give a single fasting period or tell anyone to stop medication. Use the institution’s instructions and medical advice for medication, pregnancy-related questions and other personal conditions.
| Stage | Document or question | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Current NHIS screening notice | Birth year alone cannot show exceptions |
| Institution type | Official designated screening type | General/cancer/oral/child designations differ |
| Before the visit | Written preparation instructions | Tests and personal conditions affect preparation |
| At the visit | ID and accurate questionnaire | Links the examination to the correct record |
| After the visit | Results and follow-up instructions | Screening and diagnosis are separate stages |
Does an abnormal screening result confirm disease?
A screening result can identify a need for further assessment; diagnosis and follow-up require the clinical pathway stated in the result.
The result report and its reference range belong to the examination that was actually performed. A normal result cannot answer questions about every disease, and an abnormal flag alone does not establish a diagnosis. Keep the report available for the clinician who will review it.
Some national-screening findings have a defined confirmatory-test support pathway. The supported disease, permitted institution type, time limit and number of visits differ. A private optional test and a national confirmatory benefit must not be treated as the same entitlement.
What else do people ask about Planning a checkup visit to Korea?
Can foreign insured residents use national screening?
Eligible foreign insured residents use the applicable NHIS program conditions. Nationality alone does not replace current insurance and target records.
Is the calculator an official eligibility lookup?
No. It compares published rules locally and has no access to personal NHIS records or employer lists.
Why can a past test change the answer?
Some items are offered once in an age band, while treatment or a previous examination can affect selection or deferral.
Can an annual worker get every cancer test annually?
The annual non-office rule applies to general screening. Cancer programs retain their own age, risk and interval conditions.
Does a blank statistic mean zero?
No. Blank numerical snapshots are uncollected or incompatible records and are never replaced with estimated observations.
